Message from the Dean
Welcome to the Faculty of Education (FOE) of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). The faculty which started as a school is one of the foundation faculties of the National Open University of Nigeria, and is fondly referred to as, the mother of all Faculties. The faculty is blessed with about eighty (80) full time academic staff and hundreds of other part time academic staff who are PhD holders in their various specializations, across the 36 states and the Federal Capital territory. There are five departments in the Faculty. Namely:
- Arts and Social Science Education (ASSE)
- Educational Foundations
- Science Education
- Health and Human Kinetic and
- Library and Information Science
In all we have twenty-four (24) programmes presently, while more are awaiting NUC approval. The curricula are adequate and promote a blend of intellectual skills and practical training which open the door of employability to our graduates. As an ODL institution, our delivery method is second to none. Our students, aside the live class sessions, have access to the recording of every session, discussion and chat fora as well as materials in various formats (Videos, Journals, Magazines etc etc.) on their various pages; in addition to the regular course module. We also operate a 24-hour open door policy. We have a desk officer right in your centre to attend to your complaint and enquiries. Departments
Arts and Social Science Education
Following the desire of the Federal Government of Nigeria in 2002 to establish an Open University in the country, a National Open and Distance Learning Steering Committee was set up in the Federal Ministry of Education which produced a Blue Print and Implementation Plan for the National Open and Distance Learning Programmes in the country. Upon approval of the Blue Print document by National University Commission, a national workshop to determine academic programmes to be offered was held.
Educational Foundations
You are welcome to the Department of Educational Foundations, National Open University of Nigeria, Jabi, Abuja. The Department has two undergraduate programmes and four postgraduate programmes. The undergraduate programmes are B. A. Ed. (Early Childhood Education) and B. A Ed. (Primary Education) while the postgraduate programmes are M. Ed/PhD (Educational Administration and Planning, M. Ed/PhD (Educational Technology), M. Ed. (Guidance and Counselling) and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). The Postgraduate Diploma in Distance Education (PGDDE) was formally housed in the Department but in a meeting hosted by the Regional Training and Research Institute for Distance and Open Learning (RETRIDOL) on the 29th of November, 2021, it was agreed that the programme should be handled by the Institute with full collaboration with the entire Faculty of Education.
Science Education
May I on behalf of the Department, welcome you to this unique institution- the National Open University of Nigeria. NOUN is unique in providing accessible, flexible, affordable learning opportunities to all learners irrespective of age, occupation, location. You can learn at any place and at your pace, using a number of available technological devices, including your handset. Learning materials are available online and physically. They are equally accessible in varied forms- texts, CDs, Flash drives, video and audio devices.
Health and Human Kinetics
The Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education was established based on the demand of the programme by prospective students that would not under normal circumstance attend the conventional universities to obtain a degree in Human Kinetics and Health Education and organisations that are in dare need for Human Kinetics and Health Education graduates.
Library and information Sciences
