Message from the HOD

You are welcome to the Department of Educational Foundations, National Open University of Nigeria, Jabi, Abuja. The Department has two undergraduate programmes and four postgraduate programmes. The undergraduate programmes are B. A. Ed. (Early Childhood Education) and B. A Ed. (Primary Education) while the postgraduate programmes are M. Ed/PhD (Educational Administration and Planning, M. Ed/PhD (Educational Technology), M. Ed. (Guidance and Counselling) and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). The Postgraduate Diploma in Distance Education (PGDDE) was formally housed in the Department but in a meeting hosted by the Regional Training and Research Institute for Distance and Open Learning (RETRIDOL) on the 29th of November, 2021, it was agreed that the programme should be handled by the Institute with full collaboration with the entire Faculty of Education. The undergraduate and postgraduate courses are serviced with a total of one hundred and twenty two (122) courses. These are made up of 41 courses for 100 and 200 levels as well as 81 courses for 300 Level, 400 Level, 700 Level and 800 Level. The Department provides foundation courses for other Departments in the Faculty of Education, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

Our graduates are usually sound, competitive and productive. Their employers always give us a comprehensive feedback. Based on this, our degree certificate holders are always on high demand. Products of the department can be self-employed. They can establish schools of their own and become employers of labour in any part of the world.

History of the Department

The Department of Educational Foundations came into being in 2016 when the then Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu changed the University’s school system to Faculty system. The then School of Education became the Faculty of Education with three Departments: Arts and Social Sciences Education, Educational Foundations, and Science Education. The pioneer Head of Department was Professor U. S. A. Osuji who was succeeded by Dr. Olusegun Oba-Adenuga. The third and current Head of Department is Professor Augustine C. Ukwueze.

The Department has graduated many students at all levels since its inception. Today, there are forty five academic staff and four non-academic staff in the department. The academic staff are made up of fourteen Professors (14), six Associate Professors (6), eight Senior Lecturers (8), eleven Lecturers I (11), five Lecturers II (5) and one (1) Assistant Lecturer who is already at an advanced stage in her PhD work. All others are PhD holders with vast experience.

To provide global sound foundation for inclusive teacher education through open and distance learning in line with the vision of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

Mission

To produce competent and professional teachers for all levels of education that can compete globally using competent staff for overall national development.

Philosophy

The philosophy of the Department of Educational Foundations is consistent with the Nigerian Philosophy of Education, which is anchored on the development of the individual into a sound and effective citizen for promoting integrated national development. Thus, the philosophy of the department is aimed at providing sound foundation for producing professional teachers through the open and distance learning mode who will be competent to teach at any level of education in Nigeria and anywhere in the world.
