B.Sc. (Ed) Mathematics Education
Mathematics Education was set up to train teachers who will demonstrate adequate knowledge of Mathematics with teaching competence. This is done in order to meet up with the ever increasing demand of Mathematics teachers with modern pedagogy to meet up with the challenge of instruction in the ICT age. The B.Sc. (ed.) Mathematics programme is structured to run for a minimum of four years and maximum of eight years for students starting at 100 level or minimum of three years and maximum of six years for students starting at 200 levels. Students will undergo a six week (6) practical teaching period at 300 and 400 levels.
The Philosophy of Mathematics Education Programme is to equip the teachers, regardless of time and place in an open and distance learning environment with skills of teaching the young learners to appreciate the relevance of Mathematics and to teach confidently with effective and creative methods that will make the learners have holistic development to suitably adapt to his world by applying Mathematics knowledge in resolving life challenges where appropriate.
To provide highly accessible, flexible and enhanced quality education leading to the award of a bachelor’s degree anchored by social justice, equity, equality and national cohesion through a comprehensive reach (ODL) that transcends all barriers.
To provide opportunities for the development of mathematical competences and creative minds that would equip learners with lifelong values and also produce professional teachers and leaders through Open and Distance Learning.
Admission Requirements
Candidates intending to enter the BSc. Mathematics Education Programme must satisfy the University admission requirements as follows:
ENTRY at 100 LEVEL
Five credit passes in SSCE to include Mathematics, English language and any three subjects from Further Mathematics, Physics, Computer Studies, Chemistry, Biology/Agric. Sc.
- b) Direct Entry
- i) Advanced Level passes in 2 relevant subjects to include Mathematics with SSCE requirements.
- ii) NCE with at least merit pass in 2 relevant subjects which must include Mathematics.
iii) NCE double major in Mathematics with SSCE requirements.
iii) IJMB passes in 2 relevant subjects which must include Mathematics with SSCE requirements.
Graduation Requirements
The B.Sc. (Ed.) Mathematics Education is structured to run for a minimum of four years and maximum of eight years for students starting at 100 level or minimum of three years and maximum of six years for students at 200 levels.
Degree Rule
To be eligible for the award of the B. Sc (Ed.) in Mathematics Education, a student must have passed a minimum of 120 and 90 credit units for the 4 year- and 3 year- degree programme respectively.
