Ph.D  Science Education

The Philosophy of Ph.D. ScienceEducation programme is to provide higher level manpower in the field of Science Education who is efficient in teaching , research and community service .  Such candidate should be well grounded in working in an ODL environment without barrier of access, equity and equality thereby, making useful contributions to knowledge and national development .This programme is designed primarily for high level professionals and scholarly growth in Science Education at Ph.D level.

Having undergone this programme, students should be able to:

  • design and deliver instructions in science education;
  • use the products of information and communication technology such as the radio, television, video, projectors, computers etc.) to provide effective teaching in science disciplines;
  • manage science and equipment centres effectively;
  • design, produce and utilise science instructional media;
  • carryout researches in aspects of science education.

Admission Requirements

Applicants for the PhD Science Education will be required to have a Master’s degree certificate in Science Education from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) or any other University recognized by the Senate of NOUN. Such applicants must have a minimum CGPA of  4.0 at masters level.

Admission Requirements

The maximum period required for completion of PhD Seminar presentations and thesis is between three and five years in a flexible study.To qualify for award of a PhD in Science Education, a candidate is required to

1.a)accumulate a minimum of 24 credit units made-up as follows:

   Four (4) seminars of three (3) credit units each to be presented in the first year of the Ph.D. programme ie two (2) seminars in a semester, for a total of twelve (12) credit units.

b). Twelve (12) credit units weighting attached to Ph.D. Research Project.ie     candidates are also required to execute and submit to the faculty a comprehensive research embodied in a thesis to be defended before a Committee including an External Examiner.

Therefore for the entire duration of the programme, the total credit units shall be twenty-four (24) , made up of Seminars and Project.

* Standard Pass Mark for Seminar is 50%.

Period of Grace:

The Senate at her discretion may grant a period of extension of not exceeding half (½) the maximum period where there is sufficient evidence that the candidate is making reasonable progress towards the completion of his/her thesis.
