Career Profile

Prof. Tanglang, born on August 8, 1956, in Tanglang, Billiri LGA of Gombe State, is a distinguished academic with a PhD from Ahmadu Bello University and expertise in sports management. His career began as a graduate assistant in the Department of Physical and Health Education at the University of Maiduguri in 1985, culminating in his promotion to professor in 2004. He joined the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in 2008, where he has served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Director of Learner Support Services, Director of Academic Planning, and currently Director of the Model Study Centre in Abuja, managing over 10,000 students.

Prof. Tanglang has contributed significantly to distance education, serving as Director of the African Council for Distance Education Quality Assurance and Accreditation Agency and as Africa’s focal point for the International Council for Distance Education (ICDE) Quality Network. He has over 40 publications in journals and book chapters and is an active member of numerous professional associations, including the Nigerian Association for Physical Education, the African Council for Distance Education, and the North American Society for Sports Management.

Notably, he co-led the British Council-funded research “Digital Decisions: Understanding Teachers’ Choices in Online Learning Design and Their Impacts on Learners in Sub-Saharan Africa.” He also chaired the steering committee that established the World Bank-sponsored African Centre for Technology Enhanced Learning (ACETEL) at NOUN. Prof. Tanglang’s career exemplifies excellence in education, research, and administration.

• Chaired a committee that recommended the establishment of an Emevor Community Study Centre in Delta State.
• Chaired the Sports Committee that has ensured a consistent performance by becoming the overall winner in the bi-annual Nigerian Universities Staff Sports Association (NUSSA) Games since 2014 to date.
• NOUN won the Football Trophy in the NUSSA Games at the University of Benin by beating the host university in the final.
• Construction of New playing Grounds in the Headquarters (Football, Basketball, Tennis, and Volleyball)
• Establishment of a gym for physical fitness in Lagos and the head office in Abuja.
Successfully hosted the NUSSA Games in 2017 using online registration and accreditation of athletes for the first time.
