Message from the HOD

This is to welcome all students of Human Kinetics and Health Education (both Old and New) and to inform members of the Department that like other Universities, our programmes are full-time and not part-time. Therefore, a student’s handwork will determine his/her graduation.

Available programmes in the Department are:Human Kinetics and Health Education .Human Kinetics and Health Education is one of the New approved programmes in NOUN. Our students are yet to graduate. The programme took-off (started) in 2019, with Professor Abubakar Garba Suleiman as the pioneer Head of Department. We started in Lagos, when it was the Headquarters of NOUN, later relocated to Abuja

The Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education was established based on the demand of the programme by prospective students that would not under normal circumstance attend the conventional universities to obtain a degree in Human Kinetics and Health Education and organisations that are in dare need for Human Kinetics and Health Education graduates. Earlier on in 2013, there was an attempt to start the department with a masters programme in Sports Management with senate approval of the programme, but the programme could not take off because there were no undergraduate components of the programme, so the idea of starting the department could not materialize at that time.

The department was established after the Senate approval of the programme in March 2018 and subsequent approval by the National Universities Commission dated 22nd July 2019 to take off in the 2019/2020 session to run two programmes: B.Sc. (Ed) Human Kinetics and B.Sc. (Ed.) Health Education. Before the take-off of the department as required by the Senate of NOUN, the 100 and 200 level courses were developed in 2019 by a team of course material development team comprising of subject experts, who are the course writers, content editors, graphic designers, copy editors and instructional designers.

The department took off with the appointment of Prof. A. G. Suleiman, as Head of Department on the 15th April, 2019. It was in the same year 2019 that the first batch of students were admitted into the two programmes but the same set of students started with Education and General Study courses awaiting the upload of developed course materials for the core courses the following year 2020.

The history of the department will not be complete without acknowledging the efforts of the pioneer Head of Department, Prof. A. G. Suleiman and Prof. Nebath Tanglang who initiated and facilitated the idea of starting the department, Prof. Fidel Okopi who tirelessly worked with Dr. Tessy Angba to produce a draft curriculum for the two programmes. Worthy of mention is Dr. Gloria Anetor who spent sleepless nights to ensure that course writers complied with all issues that have to do with plagiarism check results. Also the following actively participated in ensuring the department took off successfully and Dr. Bala Waziri including Dr. Agnes Kolawole who took over the headship of the Department after Professor A. G. Suleiman.
